Can a Video game make you cry? Film & Games
If film is the art of the 20th century, is perhaps the video game that of the 21st century? In the face of the
digitalization of the cinema and the discussion about its future this issue is highly topical for cineastes. From
a marketing point of view, the games branch is the only growth market in the audio-visual sector, and the big
entertainment companies now plan well in advance the game that goes with the film and vice versa.
What do the cinema film and video-game have in common? Games designers and film directors both create fictitious
worlds, and computer games and virtual realities have been topics in the cinema since "Tron" (USA 1982). While
cinema is more a passive, collective, fixed event, a computer game requires an active and individual role, making
the player the hero in a virtual world. So is the games industry the most important dream factory of the 21st
century? We have asked media scientists, artists and people from games sector to give us an answer. A series
of films as well as a supporting programme look at the boundaries between
"Like a Dragon" von Takashi Miike games and films.
