European Actors Award / "Die Europa"

The filmfest is going to award a new prize, donated by the VW Bank, to an actress or actor who has excelled because of his or her outstanding artistic performances and contribution to European film culture.

This award is going for the first time to Hanna Schygulla, star of the New German Film. She made 20 films with famous Germanfilm director, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and also worked with other prominent European directors like Ettore Scola, Jean-Luc Godard, Carlos Saura, Marco Ferreri and Andrej Wajda. The filmfest will be showing a number of her best European films.

In addition to the prize, a bronze statue called "Europa", created by the Braunschweig sculptor, Sabine Hoppe, will be awarded. Hoppe, who often uses mythological aspects of Greek antiquity in her works, has tried to create a figure that is both international and dynamic.
