New films from Braunschweig School of Arts

Sa, November 11 10:15 pm CinemaxX 4 Guests: Birgit Hein, film makers

It has become a tradition to screen recent film and video work from the local school of art (HBK) in its own special programme at the Braunschweig International Film Festival. Since 1972 there has been a special film-as-fine-arts course on offer at the school. All manner of films are made and encouraged, including experimental, documentary, animated and narrative works, as well as now popular video and multi-media installations and internet art. The common element to all these projects is a personal, individual vision, free of all censorship and commercial pressures.

Volkslied
Director: Kathrin M. Wolkowicz, D 2006, 2 min, DV, polish with german subtitles

A rural place, bedecked and fitted out. Nativity-figurines move about, dancing, cleaning chimneys, beating sheep. A voice sings a polish song about a virgin and a prostitute.

Loreley
Director: Ute Stöhr, D 2006, 9 min, video

About the tragic fate of a beautiful, young sailor, who his wrenched down into the dark depths by swirls of the Loreley.

Donnerstag blau grün
Director: Per Olaf Schmidt, D 2006, 2 min, 16mm/DV

Das Meer ist nicht weit
Director: Alex Gerbaulet, D 2006, 13 min, DV

"Yesterday I dreamed about a film I’d made for you. Since I swapped the cables the reception is better. It was quite an effort to go to the shop in the city. There is the danger that they now know what’s going on and might intercept the transmissions".

My video tells the story about that otherness. I am a drag-king, a dildo-cyborg. Not really a man. A king is more of an art-piece than a new sex, who governs with his dildo and acts in the background.

Workout
Director: Dennis Feser, D 2006, 6 min, HDV, converted to DV-PAL

"Workout" applies different neo-liberal success strategies to the human body. The video plays ironically with the inadequacy of the human body in the face of life’s requirements, determined by global economic systems.

Bill Pullman
Director: Sebastian Neubauer, 9 min

"de dentro"
Director: Peter Beyer, D 2006, 10 min, 16 mm, colour, bw

This film, nearly solely filmed in Mexico, concerns itself with the spiritual energy of this country, found in nature as well the people. This documentary film attempts to introduce, or perceive, the different rituals of the shaman Maya-tradition and the northern Huicholes (Peyoteros). The rational outside world we know merges with the infinity of the inner space, difficult to describe in words.

Mein Haus
Director: Ulrike Jeschka, D 2005/2006, 31 min, video, colour

"I like driving in my car. Aimlessly. I listen to music and let my thoughts run away with themselves..."

A slightly neurotic drive to my parents. A narrative film. About my relationship to my parents. About my questions and speculations about the causes of this behaviour, suppressed family tragedy and above all, despite this, about unspoken signs of love for one another. And while we’re on the matter, I can’t stop indulging in memories and old photos so quick. And therefore almost get into hot water, because my thoughts start to blaze...
