Merry Christmas
Director: Christian Carion, F/D/GB 2004, 115 min, 35 mm, colour, GS
Christmas 1914. West front. The German advance has come to a complete standstill. In the snow-filled trenches gruelling skirmishes take place between
Germans and the allied French and Scottish troops. The enthusiasm for the war is below zero and the wish for at least a peaceful Christmas is felt
on all sides. When Private Sprink sings "Silent Night", the Scottish bagpipes take up the melody and a little miracle takes place: the
soldiers climb out of their trenches, the barbed wire is decorated with candles and there's whisky for everyone. The following day the dead
are buried and there is even a football match. But alarmed at this fraternization with the enemy, the generals on both sides put
a prompt end to this "madness".
