Since 2002 the Braunschweig International Film Festival and the Northern French film foundation Pôle Image have been organizing a film exchange between the partner regions of Lower Saxony and Upper Normandy. It was the filmfest that initiated this first film-cultural exchange between Germany and France on a regional basis. In co-operation with Pôle Image and the Lower Saxony film promoter Nordmedia the filmfest selects the films to be shown at the beginning of March in Rouen at the Festival du cinéma nordique. Then in November the filmfest offers the artists from Upper Normandy a platform.

Pôle Image Haute-Normandie was founded in 2001. It co-operates closely with the government there and occupies itself with the production of films and photographs, with incorporating them in school curricula and with running the film archives. In addition, it supports film making in the region.

The filmfest showed "En Garde" by Ayse Polat and "Heimfahrt" by Grzegorz Muskala in Rouen in March, and now in Braunschweig Pôle Image will be presenting three middle-length films which it has supported. The directors will be present.

The filmfest will also be welcoming German and French school teachers who are participating in the pedagogical exchange "Kinema". This two-day seminar will deal with films from both countries that are later to be used in foreign language lessons in Upper Normandy and in Lower Saxony.

The photographic exhibition "Face à face" from 14th-25th November in the library of the Braunschweig Technical University will show the works of François Cavelier and Jesco Denzel, two young photographers from the College of Art in Rouen and from Hanover University. Each will portray the other's home town.

À corps défendant
Director: Raphaël Étienne, F 2005, 48 min, 35 mm, colour, GS

Marie is in love with her imprisoned boyfriend Paul and tries to keep the relationship alive without anyone learning about it. She persists until a little boy enters her life.

Photographic exhibition "Face to face" / "Face à face(s)"

Jesco Denzel, photography student at Hanover University, travelled to Rouen for two months in 2004 and photographed the showmen at a fair there. His French colleague François Cavelier, who finished his studies at the Rouen College of Art last year, visited Lower Saxony and found his motives in Peine.

Even though the photos were taken by two different men in two different spots, they have amazing similarities with each other both in form and motive. Sometimes grotesque and involuntarily humorous, however never obtrusive nor embarrassing, they can be seen in both cases as a kind of social portrait and a capturing of the moment in the day-to-day life of both regions.

The exhibition comprises 24 framed colour photographs. As of November 14th the pictures will be on display for two weeks on the second storey of the university library. The address is Pockelstraße 13. It will be open Mon.-Fri. 8.30 am - 7.00 pm and sat.10.00 am - 2.00 pm.
