The Dawn of a New Cinema in Braunschweig - Members of filmfest have established the UNIVERSUM Kinobetriebs GmbH
From the summer of 2009, after two years of meticulous planning, an arthouse cinema will open, offering local
audiences quality viewing all year round. Located right in the middle of town (Neuen Straße 8), the
re-opened venue, on the premises of the former Universum cinema, will feature two spaces for watching films,
and a café. This endeavour is the product of a newly established company, Universum Kinobetriebs GmbH, comprised of members
of the organisation behind the International filmfest Braunschweig.

Award ceremony at the 22nd Braunschweig International film festival
The Italian production "Concrete Romance" (Cemento armato) wins the audience
award "The Heinrich" at the 22nd Braunschweig International film festival. Director
Marco Martani’s absorbing drama which was presented as a German premiere
recounts the story of an uneven duel between a young man and a gangster boss. The
prize-money of € 10,000, sponsored by Volkswagen Financial Services AG is equally divided between the
director and a German distributor who decides to bring the film to German
screens (world distribution Visual Factory, UK).

presents a series of events featuring the topic of emotionality in films and games. In presentations, lectures, a retrospective and
a workshop, media scientists, artists and experts from the game industry will investigate the diffenrences and common grounds of movies and computer
games.

Braunschweig International film festival announces "Heinrich" contenders
Competition for European Debut and Second Features awarded for the 10th time
Out of 60 European submissions, candidates for this years’ audience award "The
Heinrich" have now been selected. The 10,000 Euros award for the best debut or second feature
film will be presented at the Braunschweig Film Festival for the 10th time. The prize money,
donated by the main festival sponsor Volkswagen Financial Services, is awarded to both the director and the distributor.

Six debut and second features nominated for KINEMA competition
At the 22nd Braunschweig International Film Festival (November 4-9, 2008) the French-German Youth Award KINEMA will be awarded for the second time.
Six debut and second feature films participate: three long feature films in French and three films in German language. A jury of five young adults from
France and Germany will choose the winner who will be announced on November 9th at the closing ceremony in the Braunschweig State Theatre.

Schygulla bewitches Braunschweig
Hanna Schygulla was the star of 21st Braunschweig International Film Festival. She is the first laureate of the European Actors Award, "The Europa", donated by the
film
fest’s main sponsor Volkswagen Bank. She will invest the 10.000 Euro prize money in a new camera, the acting icon
said and announced to come back to Braunschweig when her new film is completed.

French-German Cultural Council takes over patronage for Braunschweig’s "Kinema" youth prize
The French-German Cultural Council takes over patronage for the new "Kinema" youth prize which will be awarded for the
first time at the 21st Braunschweig International film festival (November 6-11).
As general secretary Eva Hoffmann-Müller announced, the Council is very pleased with the development of the school
cinema project "Kinema", since the French-German Cultural Council attributes a high significance to both a film
education and the neighbour’s language.

"Four Minutes" wins the "Heinrich"
The 20th International Film Festival Braunschweig audience award the "Heinrich" goes to German director Chris Kraus' film "Four Minutes". In the
directors second feature film feverish pictures tell the story of an impossible relationship between two women in prison: the elderly
piano teacher Traude Krüger who makes it her goal to re-transform the young murderess Jenny into the pianistic talent she once was...
The cast of "Four Minutes" includes Monica Bleibtreu, Richy Müller, Jasmin Tabatabai, Vadim Glowna and Nadja Uhl. The big discovery of
the film however is the until-now unknown Hannah Herzsprung who performs in her debut film role, convincingl playing the aggressive and problematic Jenny.

Back to Braunschweig - Matthias Müller and Christoph Girardet at the 20th International filmfest
The directors Christoph Girardet and Matthias Müller will present a selection of their collective work at the 20th Braunschweig International film
festival. In the 90s they studied together at the Braunschweig School of Visual Arts, in Professor Birgit Hein's film class and
subsequently completed their "Meisterschülerstudium" (postgraduate study). Today they belong to the most exposed filmmakers and
video artists of their generation.
Their film "Kristall" won the Canal Plus award at the Cannes Film Festival and the award for the Best Short film in the
category "Semaine de la critique".

filmfest presents "Mr. Silent Movie": Carl Davis
Carl Davis will be the star guest of the "Music & Film" section of the 20th. Braunschweig International Film Festival,
which runs from 7th – 12th November. The filmfest will dedicate, as the first festival worldwide, an extensive section to
the eclectic composer and conductor, including two silent film concerts, a Music Master Class and a selection of his most
important films.
